The Cultural Center of Le Havre, known as Le Volcan, was designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1982. Conceived as a space for culture and public gathering, the complex houses performance halls, a multimedia library, and social spaces for both residents and visitors.
This hand offering water, set within such a profound contrast, makes me think that water is meant for everyone. Niemeyer built this cultural center in the historic city of Le Havre, and even in this small detail on the building’s facade, the dialogue between the local architecture and modern design becomes visible.
“One day, as this water keeps flowing, the earth, the beaches, and the mountains will belong to all of humanity.”
