"Threads of Memory"

In a traditional house in Candelario, a mountain village in Spain, a group of women inhabits the silence with ancestral gestures. They are dressed in ceremonial garments that survive only in this place — garments passed from generation to generation, worn not for display, but as part of a living heritage.

This photographic series pays tribute to the subtle and powerful transmission of intangible cultural heritage — not through monuments or institutions, but through thread, cloth, memory, and everyday rituals. These women, through their gestures, clothing, and presence, preserve something that cannot be written or archived. It is embodied knowledge, transferred through intimacy, repetition and time.

As a visual anthropologist and documentary photographer, I was invited to share the inner space of a home where the walls, the furniture, the fabrics and the silences all carry memory. In this domestic, traditionally feminine space, identity finds continuity not through grand declarations, but through presence and quiet resilience.

The images were captured using only natural light, allowing the emotional weight of each room and the dignity of each woman to speak for themselves. The atmosphere is soft but charged — full of history, emotion and an almost sacred stillness.

These photographs do not seek to reconstruct a past, but to reveal how the past survives in the present — in thread, in breath, in the gaze of those who continue to remember. Each portrait is a quiet milestone. A testimony to the cultural resilience of women. A recognition of the house not only as shelter, but as archive — and of these women, not only as subjects, but as carriers of living memory.
