For over twelve years, Montréal-based visual artist Véronique Duplain has been developing The SelfieProject, a long-term performance where daily self-portraiture becomes both a creative ritual and a form of endurance. Each February, Duplain gives herself 28 days to imagine, build, and photograph 28 entirely different scenes. She becomes the photographer, the model, the art director, the set designer, and the performer, all at once.

The project unfolds like a diary made of images. It reveals an evolving conversation between identity, image culture, and time. Each photograph is a small world, often humorous or fragile, where beauty, fatigue, and control coexist. Duplain designs her sets by hand, using recycled materials or 3D-printed elements, combining craft and technology with a sense of play and precision. The result is a collection of images that feel at once intimate and theatrical, deeply personal yet reflective of a broader social reality.

Through The SelfieProject, Duplain explores what it means to remain present in a time that constantly demands reinvention. Her work questions how we show ourselves, how we hide, and what it takes to stay authentic when everything moves so quickly. By taking on every role behind and in front of the camera, she turns the “selfie” into a space of authorship and autonomy rather than vanity.

Over the years, The SelfieProject has become a visual record of persistence. It invites viewers to enter the artist’s world of creative discipline and quiet chaos, of performance and honesty. What began as a personal challenge has grown into an ongoing reflection on how we construct ourselves through images, and how art can still slow down time long enough for us to see who we are becoming.
