Interview with RODRI, MUSE Photography Awards Winner

1 Congratulations on winning in the MUSE Photography Awards! Can you share a little about yourself, what inspired you to pursue photography, and how has your journey evolved since your first shot?

I am a Mexican Muslim emerging artist, lawyer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist based in Dubai. I was born in Mexico City in 1994—a year of light—and grew up with a strong passion for rock music, learning to play both the guitar and drums. I later discovered a hidden talent for photography. I began translating the visions in my mind into reality through the lens.

2 Can you share the story or inspiration behind your award-winning piece? How does winning this award make you feel about your journey in photography?

©CINEMA AKIL 1446–2024 belongs to ©RODRI MAGUCHI, my latest creation and part of a broader artistic body of work within the “Islamic Rock” style I have developed. Through this work, I explore a distinct and introspective interpretation of contemporary emotions in the Middle East. I see images in my mind, and rock art takes shape—almost like painting. “MAGUCHI” means powerful in Russian. This award brings me great joy, as the work is deeply inspired by the visions I strive to capture and express through photography.

3 How do you decide which photo to submit for a competition?

I usually create a series of images and spend time reflecting on them. From there, I select the one that best captures the essence and shared characteristics of the collection.

4 What first made you pick up a camera?

I am a musician and play the guitar. I am drawn to rock music, where the sound of the electric guitar feels like a powerful force that transforms the surrounding space into an entirely different realm. I wanted to capture this energy through photography, which led me to begin experimenting with images to see if I could bring that vision to life.

5 What’s your favorite type of photography, and why do you love it?

I focus on conceptual photography, particularly images that convey clear and direct messages. I am deeply drawn to rock-inspired visual expression through photography, especially works that emphasize warm tones such as reds and oranges. I am also inspired by the way shapes and textures from the Middle East emerge vividly through the lens.

6 What’s your go-to camera setup, and why does it work best for your projects? What’s your favorite feature?

I use a Nikon D7000. I adjust the ISO settings to achieve the texture and tonality I envision, and then I capture the image. My favorite feature is the ISO itself, as it allows me to shape the final look with precision.

7 If someone looked at your work, what’s the one thing you’d want them to feel?

I want viewers to feel as though they have entered a kind of Middle Age rock era in the Middle East—something akin to what Rococo represented for Western culture. I want the image to feel painterly, as though they are looking at a photograph that resembles a painting.

8 What was the most challenging part of capturing your winning shot?

It is always about taking many photographs and selecting the one that best captures the intended result. I also pay close attention to timing—choosing days with strong sunlight and shooting when the light hits the subject directly, while avoiding cloud cover.

9 Is there a specific place or subject that inspires you the most?

I draw strong inspiration from current events in the region. I am also deeply motivated by knowing that people are engaging with my work—especially when it brings smiles to their faces, particularly children.

10 Who or what has been your biggest influence in photography?

I don’t have a specific influence in this regard; my work is shaped more by personal vision and experience.

11 What message would you share to inspire photographers to participate in photography awards, and what advice would you give to help them excel in the competition?

Find the inspiration and motivation to curate your strongest images, shape a narrative around them, and present them with intention.

12 What’s one piece of advice for someone just starting in photography?

It is about stepping into a new world. Pick up your camera as you would a new guitar, ready to explore and create. Build a concept in your mind, then go out and bring it to life.

13 What role do editing and post-processing play in your creative workflow?

It does not play a major role. I always aim to capture the image in the moment, with a single click. I rely on my focus and instinct to see and seize the exact moment as it unfolds.

14 How do you see technology, like AI, influencing the future of photography and your own approach?

It plays a significant role. However, when you truly understand how to capture an image and strengthen it through your own vision and concept, the work ultimately becomes your own. The relationship between AI and the human mind is an important dynamic to consider.

15 If you could photograph anything or anyone in the world, what would it be?

I would like to take pictures of Turkey, of Spain and much other places with Islamic heritage. One day going to Palestine to consolidate something of way higher significance.
