Oxopoli (“outer city”) is part of the Old Town of Corfu island, Greece, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated outside the three town’s forts, is mainly a neoclassical building stock from the Venetian period. The ensemble of the fortifications and the Old Town has its roots back to the 8th century BC and to the Byzantine period. From the 15th century this major Mediterranean fortified port city has been under Venetian rule for about four centuries, then passing to French, British and Greek governance. Even in the era of massive tourism, it is still possible to admire its beauty, appreciate its authenticity, and feel the related nostalgia. The vibrant part of the Old Town is full of points of interest to wonder and visit. with many local shops, coffee places, bars and lovely restaurants. For those willing to discover more, though, the less commercial part is a small labyrinth of amazing alleys and narrow streets offering a real time travel experience.
